High blood pressure, also known as the “silent killer”

High blood pressure is one of the main risk factors associated with premature health and long-term illness due to CVD (cardiovascular disease). CVD is the leading cause of premature death in Ireland with about 10,000 deaths per annum - approximately 8,000 coronary related and 2,000 stroke related.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is often called “the silent killer” because it typically has no symptoms. Did you know that over 40% of adults aged over 45 have undiagnosed high blood pressure. Alongside the importance of having your blood pressure checked regularly.

Here are five things you can do to ensure that you do to maintain normal blood pressure.

  1. Walk and exercise regularly.
  2. Reduce your salt intake.
  3. Drink less alcohol.
  4. Cut back on caffeine.
  5. Learn to manage stress.
